HEMI Fellowship Virtual Exhibit
– Hide DescriptionJohn's Hopkins HEMI (High Energy Materials Institute) resident artist and MICA professor Stephen Hendee’s initial point of reference for his research fellowship was conversations with HEMI researcher Sung Hoon Kang about his lab’s work on dynamic structural lattices. In response, Hendee developed virtual models for structural materials and latices to be produced at a miniature scale while also experimenting with materials in his own studio since physical access to the materials labs was limited during the pandemic. One of the structures that Hendee focused on was a structure combining carbon and crystalline forms. The investigation of synthetic structural aggregates lead to development of unique materials with dynamic and durable properties in permanent objects. Here he presents 3D printed models and cast material structures at various scales.
